Come and see why The Sunday Times has listed us in their Best Places to Work awards in both 2024 and 2025 – and why we proudly placed in the top 10 medium-sized organisations nationwide.
We’re a law firm with a difference. We care just as much about what our employees get out of working for us as we do about what they put in.
For us, it’s a no brainer. A team that enjoys great job satisfaction will be more engaged, more ambitious and more dedicated to excellence than a team that feels undervalued, unappreciated and overworked.
In a recent staff survey:
- 95% of staff said they enjoyed their job
- 96% of our staff said they were proud to work for Attwaters
- 95% of staff said their employer cares about their wellbeing
- 93% of staff said they felt they received reward and recognition
- 93% of staff said they have enough information (and training) to do their job well
- 93% of staff said they felt empowered
This recognition — both from our employees and from prestigious national awards — reflects our genuine commitment to putting our people first. We’re proud that our culture of support, opportunity, and wellbeing earned us a spot in the top 10 medium-sized organisations in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Best Places to Work.
Attwaters invests in its employees because it makes good business sense. And here’s how we do it.
We bring joy to your job
We recognise that people spend a lot of their time working. And we want that time to be fulfilling as well as fun. From charity bakes and team picnics to lunchtime walks and book groups, our offices host a range of social activities that help people explore new interests and develop new connections.
Each Attwaters office has a designated Social and Wellbeing Champion who organises local events and initiatives to encourage better health and engagement at work. Employees can also enjoy company-wide events, including a Christmas party, summer social and online charity quiz.
We encourage our people to take an active role in organising these and other activities through a number of committees. Are you great at planning corporate entertainment? Do you love devising quiz questions? Or maybe, you want to inspire the next generation of lawyers by overseeing our attendance at careers fairs? At Attwaters, we harness your professional and personal talents – and help you develop new ones.
We care about your wellbeing
Attwaters believes in looking after your mental, as well as physical, health. Seven members of our team have received Mental Health First Aider accreditations and play an active role in championing a positive and supportive approach to mental health in our workplace.
Thanks to the MHFA Champion course from MHFA England, our team members are qualified to recognise the main signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and provide initial support.
Everyone at Attwaters is covered by our Employee Assistance Programme, which provides access to free, confidential advice about personal problems that might be adversely impacting work performance, health or wellbeing. Employees are also enrolled into our healthcare cash plan as soon as they have completed their probationary period.
We excel at client care
All Attwaters’ lawyers are specialists in their field. They don’t dabble in areas they’re unfamiliar with because it’s not fair on our clients and it’s not fair on them.
We’re proud that every client has access to accurate, market-leading advice and can feel confident that their matter is in safe hands.
When you join Attwaters, you will be joining a firm at the forefront of the legal profession. And you’ll be joining a firm where you gain a sense of pride and purpose.
We encourage a healthy work-life balance
No matter how ambitious you are in your career, you also have a life to live. We give our people the flexibility they need to achieve a work-life balance that suits them.
This could mean a hybrid working arrangement (currently around 65% of our employees split their time between home and the office) or adjusted hours. We don’t expect you to work every waking hour just to get ahead.
We nurture your ambitions
Attwaters isn’t just a great place to work, it’s a great place to grow. Our senior leaders play an active role in mentoring and developing employees so they can realise their career goals. When it comes to your career, we want you to feel like the sky’s the limit.
Over the years, we’ve sponsored dozens of employees to study for qualifications that have enabled them to take their next step on the career ladder. If it will benefit you in your role, we’ll consider it – nothing is off the table. Below is a snapshot of some of the professional qualifications we’ve sponsored:
- Specialist Paralegal Qualification
- Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX)
- Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC)
- The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP)
- The Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- The Institute of Legal Finance & Management (ILFM)
- The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD)
- Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
If you’re looking to advance into some of our firm’s most senior positions, we offer a career path that explains the competencies needed to reach your goal.
We don’t just focus on legal and fee-earning skills. From time management to team leadership, we help people develop the talents they need to succeed. As well as encouraging ongoing learning, we organise in-house training sessions for our employees on key topics, such as business development, networking, and supervising others. Additionally, we offer in-house workshops for Heads of Departments, to ensure they are the best managers they can be.
With monthly one-to-ones and six-monthly appraisals for all staff, we ensure you receive the feedback you need to improve, progress and achieve your full potential.
We promote equality, diversity and inclusion
Diverse teams result in diverse ideas. Attwaters brings together people from different backgrounds to deliver exceptional client services.
We provide the resources needed to help everyone excel and promote an inclusive culture where people feel empowered to share their views. We celebrate shared successes and respect differences.
We give back
As a leading regional business, we believe we have a responsibility to give back to the communities we have proudly served for so many decades.
Each year, we select a deserving charity to focus our fundraising efforts. For 2025, our staff chose the Mudlarks Garden Café in Hertford as our Charity of the Year, an inspiring organisation that provides horticultural training, therapy and paid work experience to adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues, helping to foster community inclusion and personal growth.
We also encourage our people to support a range of local initiatives throughout the year, including donating to food banks.
