Patient awarded £25,000 for inadequate surgery which led to finger amputation
A surgeon has paid £25,000 to a patient whose finger was amputated after inadequate surgery.
In November 2022, the claimant was admitted to a private hospital for Dupuytren’s fasciectomy – a surgical procedure removing the connective tissue which causes the fingers to bend towards the palm. The surgery was apparently uneventful but three days later, the patient returned to the doctor as the tip of her little finger looked black. Healthcare staff noted that the patient had no sensation in her finger. The surgeon then advised that she was likely to lose the top of her finger down to the first knuckle. It was amputated in December 2022.
Substandard care
An investigation by the private health group found that the wound dressing applied after the surgery did not allow room for post-operative swelling. The bandage was wrapped too tightly and the hand was immobilised using a splint, thus compromising the vascular supply to the finger.
The patient instructed Attwaters to act on her behalf and investigate this case of medical negligence. We sent a formal letter to the surgeon, detailing the substandard care and treatment that was provided to our client. We stated that this had caused increased pain and suffering for the claimant, ultimately resulting in the amputation.
Surgeon pays £25,000 in damages
The doctor admitted breach of duty but reserved their position on causing the amputation. After we served our medical evidence and detailed the financial losses suffered by our client, the surgeon offered £20,000 in compensation. However, our Medical Negligence team was able to negotiate an increase to the sum of £25,000.
