Is your Will still right for you?

This Update Your Will Week (2 – 8 March 2026), Attwaters Solicitors is proud to support The Association of Lifetime Lawyers in raising awareness of the importance of having an up-to-date, legally valid Will.

A Will is far more than a legal document. It sets out your wishes clearly, protects the people closest to you, and ensures your estate is handled in the way you intend. Yet many people either haven’t made a Will or haven’t reviewed theirs in years.

Why updating your Will matters

Modern families are more complex than ever. Blended families, unmarried partners, business interests, property ownership, and changing financial circumstances all mean that assumptions can be risky.

Without a valid Will:

  • Your estate will be distributed under the rules of intestacy
  • The law decides who inherits – and this may not reflect your wishes
  • Loved ones could face avoidable stress, delay, and potential disputes.

A carefully prepared and regularly reviewed Will gives certainty, clarity, and reassurance at what will already be a difficult time.

When should you review your Will?

We recommend reviewing your Will every five years, or sooner if you experience a significant life event, such as:

  • Marriage or entering into a civil partnership (which can revoke an existing Will)
  • Divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership
  • Becoming a parent or grandparent
  • Buying or selling property
  • Changes to your financial position
  • Starting or selling a business
  • The death of a beneficiary or executor
  • You or a beneficiary obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate.

Your Will should evolve as your life does.
