How to reduce your risk of skin cancer as UK cases rise
It’s estimated that around 250,000 people in the UK will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year, with both non-melanoma and melanoma cases on the rise. Excessive exposure to the sun and its ultraviolet (UV) light is a major risk factor for all forms of skin cancer, which means many cases are preventable.
As the British weather improves, it’s important to remember to stay protected – even when it’s overcast as 90% of UV rays can still pass through clouds. Health experts recommend:
- Seeking the shade during the hottest part of the day (11am – 3pm in the UK)
- Covering up with clothes, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses
- Regularly applying a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and four or five stars.
Skin can be damaged in just 15 minutes
In the UK, the sun can be strong enough to damage unprotected skin from mid-March to mid-October – and this can happen after just 15 minutes of exposure depending on your risk profile and the UV index.
This index indicates the strength of the sun’s UV rays on a scale of one to 11. If it’s three or higher, then you need to think about protecting your skin – even if you’re walking the dog or weeding the garden.
Early skin cancer diagnosis saves lives
Skin cancer comes in many forms, and some instances can be more difficult to diagnose than others. As comedian Katherine Ryan discovered when she flagged a suspect mole with a doctor, who initially dismissed her concerns. Tests went on to reveal the mole was early melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer as it can spread to other parts of the body.
A missed or delayed diagnosis of melanoma – or any cancer – can have a negative impact on a patient’s treatment and prognosis. Skin cancer survival rates are much higher when it’s detected and treated early. You can learn more about how to identify potential skin cancer here.
