Shared ownership is an increasingly popular government scheme that enables first-time buyers to get on the property ladder by purchasing a percentage of their home and paying rent on the remainder. It enables buyers with a lower income or a smaller deposit to access mortgage finance, whilst giving them the opportunity to purchase more of the property over time (also known as staircasing), as and when their finances allow.
