Delayed gynaecological care impacts women’s wellbeing
Tens of thousands of women in the UK are being forced to wait months even years to be treated for a range of gynaecological health problems.
Waiting lists for gynaecology appointments across the UK have more than doubled since February 2020. As of December 2024, 44% of patients had been waiting over 18 weeks for gynaecology services, which can include treatment for fibroids and heavy periods.
Women unable to work while waiting for treatment
Diagnosis and treatment delays can have a significant impact on a patient’s wellbeing and quality of life. According to a report by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, three quarters of women waiting for care cited worsening mental health while more than two thirds reported being unable to take part in daily activities including work.
For some women, a long wait time can leave them infertile or battling potentially fatal conditions. A survey by the Department of Health and Social Care revealed more than a quarter of women in England are living with a serious reproductive health issue, such as endometriosis and ovarian cancer, which can progress if not treated promptly.
Prioritise women’s health to improve outcomes
With cases and waiting times rising, health leaders are calling for urgent change. Dr Ranee Thakar, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, believes “women are being let down” and highlights “the persistent lack of priority given to women and women’s health”.
One survey found that more than 80% of women in England felt healthcare professionals did not listen to them. For example, symptoms were not taken seriously or even dismissed with limited opportunities to discuss treatment options.
